Using movement, I will tell the stories of those that might otherwise not be heard. By gathering stories from the local community, I will create a dance/theater work that interweaves modern narratives with the tale of Alan Turing, the father of computer science who was persecuted for his lifestyle.
Alan Turing played a significant role in decoding German ciphers during WWII and is widely considered to be the founder of modern computer science, but in 1952 he was arrested in the UK for being gay. At a time when the rights of LGBT people are being highlighted in local and national policy, it is important to keep the dialogue open, and as a choreographer I am committed to using dance as a vehicle for education and social justice. I will gather artists and activists to create a performance that will intertwine the stories of past and present, and engage the broader community in a discussion of policy, art, and history. $3,000 will be used for rehearsal/performance space, publicity, set/costumes, lighting, compensating performers.
