In order to advance Break Away's mission of "creating lifelong active citizens," we're piloting the use of digital storytelling on alternative breaks. Students will create short advocacy films that synthesize issue education, interviews with community partners, and personal reflection.
The $3,000 will be used to cover the costs associated with implementing a digital storytelling program at the national level. At our summer conference in Spartanburg, South Carolina, we plan to train staff and students from 30 member campuses on storytelling techniques. Using these new-found skills, member campuses will be able to launch digital storytelling projects in communities across the country. More specifically, these funds will be used to purchase video equipment, develop training webinars, and provide chapters with the resources necessary to effectively communicate the power of alternative breaks. These short films will serve as powerful tools for engaging outside audiences in the social issues these programs address.
